Engineering education has a long tradition in the Czech lands. One of its founders, Christian Joseph Willenberg, addressed a petition to Emperor Leopold I. in January 1705, asking permission to begin teaching engineering sciences. Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT in Czech, sometimes confusingly referred as CTU in English) is one of the largest universities in the Czech Republic, and is one of the oldest institutes of technology in Central Europe founded in 1806. The Czech Technical University in Prague is ranked among the top 500 world universities. The current ranking is identified as 401st to 500th, without further specification.
